Admissions

Home Schooled Students

OBU is home-school friendly. We want your college preparation and admission process to be as easy as possible.

What to Send OBU as a Homeschool Student

OBU welcomes homeschool students and families with a supportive community where you can build relationships, find your place and feel at home. We’re here to make the admissions process clear and manageable. Review the requirements below, gather your materials and take the next step toward becoming a Bison with confidence

When applying to college as a homeschool student, your high school curriculum should include at least 17 units with each unit representing one year of satisfactory work. We recommend distributing your coursework as follows:

  • English: 4 units (Journalism or business English should not be used as substitutes.)
  • Math: 3 units, including algebra I, algebra II and geometry. Those intending to pursue the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Science in Education in science or mathematics education are encouraged to take as much mathematics as possible, including trigonometry and calculus.
  • Science: 3 units of college preparatory science, which may include one unit of general science. The other two should include biology, chemistry, physics, or another laboratory science. Those intending to pursue the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Science in Education in science or mathematics education are encouraged to take three units of laboratory science.
  • Social Science: 3 units, including courses in American history and world history. Other options include such courses as sociology, economics, psychology, geography, and state history.
  • Language: 2 units in the same language.
  • Academic Electives: 2 units, including one unit in computer applications.

We will need a transcript of at least six semesters of your homeschool high school work for 9th–12th grades. An umbrella homeschool organization or teaching parents may submit your transcript to us. If you need assistance, feel free to use this editable PDF version (Printable Version). Here is a prefilled example of a transcript. Here is a GPA calculation table. You are welcome to provide your own transcript format as long as it contains the following elements:

  • Years of study
  • Course titles
  • Letter grades
  • Credits or Carnegie units completed Grading scale
  • Cumulative GPA Graduation date

If you are completing any dual-enrollment courses (college-level courses that you want to use for both high school and college credit), please indicate the name of the college on your application. Your dual- enrollment coursework should be included on your high school transcript. To determine transfer credit, we will also need an official college transcript and catalog (or a URL to a webpage that contains course descriptions) for each college-level course.

Your admission will be based on a written description or a transcript of your homeschool experience and either an ACT, SAT, or CLT score or supplemental admission documents through the Test-Optional Admission process.

Regular admission requires an ACT composite score of at least 20 or a re-centered SAT score of at least 950.

How Homeschooling Affects Aid

We are happy to announce OBU's Bison Pact, which can make your tuition and college education more affordable. If you qualify for Oklahoma’s Promise and complete the required steps, OBU will cover the remaining tuition and general student fees after other state, federal, and OBU aid have been applied. As a homeschooled student, you are eligible for federal aid if:

  • You have completed a high school program (evident with a graduation date on a transcript or letter from your parents) OR
  • You are beyond the age of compulsory attendance in the state in which the college is located. The age of compulsory attendance in Oklahoma is 18.
