Theatre Scholarship

Theatre Scholarships are available to qualifying students with outstanding talent in performance, technical theatre, or theatre education. Only students majoring in theatre are qualified to receive financial assistance. If you have any additional questions, please contact thea@okbu.edu.

Requirements for Theatre Scholarship Applicants

Students applying for a scholarship must complete the following guidelines.

  1. Apply to OBU. While the theatre faculty will hear your audition at any time, we cannot offer financial aid until you have applied and been accepted to the university.
  2. Submit completed Scholarship Application.
  3. When we receive the Scholarship Application, we will contact you to schedule an on campus interview. Possible interview dates are listed below, which correspond to Bison Days here at OBU. If one of these days does not work, we will schedule a private visit, as scheduling allows.
  4. The format for your interview will depend on your area of interest and your intended major.
    • For theatre education, prepare a brief teaching demonstration on the theatre subject of your choice. This should not last more than 2-3 minutes. After your demonstration, the interview will consist of a review of your previous work and a Q&A session about your ambition as a teacher.
    • For performance, the audition will include two contrasting monologues that display the breadth of your talent. The combined time limit for both monologues is 3 minutes. After the audition, your interview will consist of a review of your previous work and a Q&A session about your career goals in the entertainment industry.
    • For technical theatre, you will prepare a 2–3-minute presentation of your portfolio highlighting your previous work in printed or digital format followed by a Q&A session about your career goals in the entertainment industry.
  5. If you cannot come to campus, we offer this alternative:
    • Record a 2–3-minute statement that includes the following information:
      • A standard slate: greeting, your name, grade level, where you are currently enrolled, and your hometown.
      • For prospective teachers, record a statement of what inspired you to want to teach, why teaching theatre is important to you, and your ultimate ambition as a teacher. This should not last more than 2-3 minutes.
      • For scholarship audition record two contrasting monologues that display the breadth of your talent. The combined time limit for both monologues is 3 minutes.
      • For technical theatre, you will prepare a 2–3-minute presentation highlighting your previous work and displaying your portfolio in printed or digital format.
      • As a conclusion, say "thank you" and restate your name.
      • Whichever format you choose (teaching statement, performance, or portfolio presentation), your video must be a single take, without edits.
    • Be warned that this is not as easy as it sounds! Every aspect of your video, including choices of wardrobe, background, visual and sound quality, verbal preparation, and onscreen presence will be evaluated.
    • Once you have recorded and edited your video, upload it to YouTube (unlisted) and send a link to john.dement@okbu.edu.
  6. While written recommendations are not required, a message from your high school drama teacher, community theatre director, summer theatre work, church drama leader, etc. can be emailed to thea@okbu.edu.
