Certificate Options
Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate: 18 hours
OBU’s graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to support English language learners in diverse classroom settings. The curriculum covers linguistics, language acquisition, and practical strategies tailored to the English language development of P-12 learners.
Behavior and Trauma Certificate: 18 hours
OBU's Behavior and Trauma graduate certificate focuses on the impact of behavior and trauma on students' development and academic success. The courses emphasize behavior and trauma identification, assessment, and intervention for classroom teachers.
Curriculum and Instruction Certificate: 18 hours
OBU's graduate certificate in Curriculum and Instruction prepares educators to become dynamic leaders in their field. With a focus on educational leadership, instructional methodologies, school-wide collaboration and intervention, and curriculum assessment and design, our program is tailored to prepare teachers for advanced roles such as instructional coaching, curriculum specialist, and other school and district leadership positions. Through practical applications, our courses equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive positive change in education, impacting both current and future generations of learners.
Reading Specialist Certificate: 18 hours
OBU's Reading Specialists graduate certificate prepares teachers to transform P12 students into confident, successful readers. Instruction and training aligned to research in the components of the science of reading equip teachers to support, supplement, and extend classroom reading instruction to meet the individual needs of students and open the world of written text. Our courses equip you to support literacy development and foundational skills, administer diagnostic assessments and plan evidence-based intervention guided by current research.
Alternative Teaching Certificate (ACCESS): 18 hours
OBU’s Alternative Teaching Certificate program, also known as ACCESS (Alternative Certification and Credentialing for Elementary and Secondary Schools) offers courses that academically prepare you as an educator in your pursuit of alternative certification.
Advanced Teaching Certificate (Integrated program): 18 hours
OBU's Advanced Teaching graduate certificate offers undergraduate education majors the option to take courses at an advanced level. The courses help future educators cultivate an expertise in developing, analyzing, implementing, and evaluating instructional strategies in a variety of educational settings.

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the U.S. or foreign equivalent as approved by a specific program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Official transcript(s) must reflect work from all colleges or universities contributing to your degree. Please send an electronic copy of your official transcript to graduate.info@okbu.edu.
- Statement of Purpose—Please type a writing sample using the prompts below in your student portal or upload the completed statement. (Each part should be approximately 150 words in length.)
- How did you learn about the Master of Arts in Teaching program?
- Explain why you are seeking a master’s degree in teaching.
- Describe your experience(s) working with P-12 students inside or outside classroom settings.
- What do you hope to achieve in your career in 5-10 years, and how do you think this program will help you achieve these goals?
- One Recommendation Form (must be from your principal if you’re currently working at a K-12 school)
- Applicants who do not meet the 3.0 admissions standard may apply for Conditional Acceptance into the program.

Integrated MAT
The 4+1 M.A.T. offers education majors the opportunity to take 12 hours of integrated courses for undergraduate and master’s credit, with the option to continue on and complete two master’s level certificates resulting in a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
The 4+1 offers non-education undergraduate students at OBU the opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree, including 12 hours of integrated education courses as electives, and then continue on to complete a master’s degree with the ACCESS certificate and one additional education certificate.
Admissions Policy for Integrated Program
Students may apply to the integrated program upon completion of their first semester at OBU. They must have a 3.0 GPA and one positive faculty recommendation to be considered for the integrated program. To continue in the program, students must maintain As and Bs grade levels in the integrated courses.
