OBU Approved to Launch First Doctoral Program: Doctor of Occupational Therapy

April 16, 2025

OBU has received approval from the Institutional Actions Council (IAC) of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to offer its first doctoral program: the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD). The approval, effective April 1, 2025, marks a historic step forward as the university expands its academic offerings in the health sciences.

Applications are open for the OTD program, which will officially launch in January 2026.

“This is a major future shaping moment,” said Dr. Heath A. Thomas, OBU president. “The approval of our first doctoral program signals the next chapter in our commitment to preparing graduates for service in high-demand, high-impact fields. With the launch of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, we are answering a real and growing need in healthcare while staying true to our mission to integrate faith with learning and leadership.”

The hybrid accelerated 105-credit program is designed to prepare students for entry-level occupational therapy practice in just two years (six semesters). It combines asynchronous and live online coursework with immersive, on-campus labs, extensive clinical fieldwork, and a 14-week capstone experience.

Rooted in Christian values, OBU’s OTD program is uniquely designed to equip students with the clinical excellence, spiritual grounding, and servant leadership needed to thrive in today’s healthcare environment. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for occupational therapists is projected to grow 11% from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Dr. Brandy Brown, program director, leads a team of experienced faculty committed to developing compassionate and competent practitioners. The program’s curriculum integrates academic rigor with spiritual formation, preparing students to view their profession not only as a career but also as a calling.

The priority application deadline is June 20, 2025. Prospective students can find more information and begin the application process through the Centralized Application Service for Occupational Therapy Programs (OTCAS) at otcas.liaisoncas.com or by visiting the OTD program page.
