March 13, 2024
OBU has named Dr. Joshua Chism as its new associate professor of music, choral and vocal, effective August 1, 2024. Chism, previously serving at Whitworth University as the coordinator of music education and associate director of choral studies, brings a robust background in music education and performance to his new role.
With degrees in music education, composition, and conducting from institutions including the University of Oklahoma, University of Missouri–Columbia and Missouri State University, Chism's academic credentials position him as a seasoned professional in his field. Notably, he holds Kodály Certification across various levels.
Chism's teaching approach emphasizes a quality and equitable music-making process characterized by fast-paced and energetic choral rehearsals. His expertise extends beyond academia, as he is also recognized for his service as a church musician since 2012.
“We are excited to see Dr. Joshua Chism join us as associate professor of music, choral and vocal in the fall,” Dr. Matthew Emerson, OBU co-provost and dean of theology, arts and humanities, said. “Dr. Chism will lead our choirs and teach our voice students and also help us connect to churches and schools around the state. He is an excellent musician; a dedicated Christian, husband and father; and a student-oriented teacher. Dr. Chism will help us continue to grow our Division of Music and to equip our students to live all of life, all for Jesus.”
Chism's appointment underscores OBU's commitment to academic excellence and its mission of integrating faith into education. His addition to the OBU faculty is anticipated to enrich the university's musical programs further and foster a vibrant learning environment for students.
