Local Artists Showcased at OBU’s Art on the Hill

Varied displays of local art including ceramics, woven pieces, jewelry, photography and baked goods were showcased at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Art on the Hill as part of The Weekend festivities. The public event was held Saturday, Oct. 21, from 12–3 p.m. on the campus’ oval.

Vendors included artisans from Shawnee and the surrounding area. Aurianna Palmer, a 2022 OBU graphic design graduate and owner of Foundwell, displayed her personal works of photography, hand lettering and graphic design. After graduating from OBU, Palmer continued her studies in Cork, Ireland, where she received a master’s degree in digital arts and humanities. “My time in Ireland inspired many of my pieces of photography. It is so fun to return to campus and share this new business venture and my art,” she said.

OBU sophomore marketing student Chloe Grantham hosted the “Mean Green Selling Machine”, a student-created business and a key part of her marketing coursework. Grantham and a team of students designed OBU customized Christmas ornaments. “This festival is a great learning opportunity and a chance to promote the sale of our ornaments. It is a perfect way to converse and connect with customers which is an important element of sales,” Grantham said.

Emma Carr, a 2023 graduate of OBU’s graphic design program, highlighted various pencil sketches of notable OBU landmarks including Shawnee Hall, Raley Chapel and a scene from OBU’s Green campus. Carter now teaches art at the secondary grade level in Tulsa.

Music, yard games, warm temperatures, and a mix of students, faculty, families and alumni surrounded the lineup of artists.

Corey Fuller, division chair for OBU’s Art and Design programs and coordinator of Art on the Hill, has been a member of the faculty for fifteen years. He said, “Art on the Hill has a long history at OBU. Originally, it was an event that featured music, poetry, artwork and other creative disciplines during homecoming. Three years ago, we moved the event outside on the oval lawn.

“By being held outdoors, homecoming guests attending the noon barbeque and touring buildings have the perfect opportunity to visit booths and purchase selected pieces,” Fuller said. “We love the opportunity to showcase various forms of art, design and creative work of our local community. Art on the Hill is a relaxing event, a great opportunity to shop, and something we look forward to hosting each year,” he concluded.
