2023 OBU Music Artist Series Welcomes Polyphonists Quartet

January 13, 2023

OBU will host the Polyphonists in concert Friday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. They will perform in Raley Chapel’s Yarborough Auditorium as part of the Division of Music 2022-2023 Artist Series.

The Polyphonists are a quartet from two households: soprano Amy Broadbent and tenor Matthew Hill from Washington, D.C., and mezzo-soprano Sylvia Leith and bass-baritone Edmund Milly from New York City.

The word “polyphony” describes many independent voices interwoven in harmony, and that is the group’s ethos. Each Polyphonist is a credentialed soloist, but their voices combine in an ensemble to create music that transcends their individuality.

As soloists, the quartet has performed a wide variety of concert, oratorio, and opera repertoire with ensembles including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, American Bach Soloists, the Oregon Bach Festival, Charleston Symphony, Washington Concert Opera, and Washington Master Chorale.

Most recently, the Polyponists have performed six concert programs for a variety of presenters in the D.C. and Baltimore region, produced eight music videos, offered educational residencies at universities, and premiered a new work by Berlin-based composer Conrad Winslow.

This season, the quartet looks forward to collaborating with New York composer Jonathan Woody on a new commission, and touring the U.S. with several premiere concert programs.

The upcoming performance is free and open to the public. For more information about OBU Music, please visit the Division of Music website.
