October 13, 2022
Dr. John Avant, director and president of Life Action Ministries, delivered the OBU chapel message Oct. 12. The service took place in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium on the OBU campus in Shawnee. He discussed the importance of the revival of God’s people and the movement of the Holy Spirit.
“We’re in the greatest spiritual awakening in the history of the world, and at the same time we’re missing it,” he said. “If we’re in this existential imminent crisis, what are we missing?
“In Acts 13:52, we learn the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. We are commanded in Ephesians 15 to be filled with the Holy Spirit,” he said. “You know if you’re filled with something because what fills you defines you,” he said.
Avant spoke about the importance of fire, unity, evangelism, and love (FUEL) as explained in Acts 4:31-35.
“If you want, the Lord can change your fuel. He can empty that tank and fill you with his spirit,” he said.
Previously Avant served as senior pastor of First Baptist Concord in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he served at a mega-church with 8,000 members. He has also pastored at churches in Texas, Georgia and Louisiana. Avant is the author of four books: The Passion Promise, Authentic Power, If God Were Real and Revival Revived, which he co-authored. He earned his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and his M.Div. and Ph.D. from Southwestern Seminary. Avant has also previously taught at OBU. He travels more than 260 days a year teaching the gospel.
