Cabal to Deliver Philosophy Forum Lecture Feb. 11

Dr. Ted Cabal, professor of philosophy of religion at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, will deliver the first Philosophy Forum lecture of the spring 2022 semester Friday, Feb. 11. His lecture, titled “The Christian Promise and Peril of Philosophy,” will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Tulsa Royalties Auditorium inside Bailey Business Center on the Oklahoma Baptist University campus in Shawnee.

Cabal serves as professor of philosophy of religion in the School of Theology at Southwestern. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Dallas Baptist University. He then earned a Master of Arts, also from Dallas Baptist. He continued to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned both a Master of Divinity and a Ph.D.

His research interests focus on philosophy of religion, faith and science, and apologetics. After a radical conversion from atheism, he became a street evangelist, church planter and pastor. Prior to his current term of service at Southwestern, he served as a professor for Dallas Baptist University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a previous stint at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1995 to 1998).

He served as the general editor for “The Apologetics Study Bible” (B&H, 2017) and contributed numerous articles to that publication. He has also contributed articles to the “Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary” (B&H, 2003) and the “Worldview Study Bible” (B&H, 2018). He has written journal articles for The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, The Journal of Frontier Missions and The Bulletin of Religious and Theological Studies. He is the co-author of “Controversy of the Ages: Why Christians Should Not Divide over the Age of the Earth” (Lexham Press, 2018). He and his wife, Cheri, have three sons and eight grandchildren. He is an avid guitar player.

The remainder of the spring semester will feature four additional Philosophy Forums. All events will take place at 4 p.m. in Tulsa Royalties Auditorium.

Dr. Randy Ridenour, professor of Philosophy, will share a lecture Friday, March 4, titled “Beauty and Freedom: A Case for the Liberal Arts.” Dr. Timothy Darr, assistant professor of computer science, will lecture on “Imago Hominis: A Gentle Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and the Imago Dei.” His lecture will take place Friday, April 8.

The fourth Philosophy Forum of the semester will take place Friday, April 29. It will feature a dialogue between Dr. Tawa Anderson, associate professor of philosophy, and Patrick Marsh, chief of science and support for the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center. Their discussion will be titled “Climate Change and Creation Stewardship.”

The final Philosophy Forum of the spring will be held Friday, May 13. It will feature a mock debate between Anderson and senior philosophy minor Mason Rawls. The two will debate the question, “Does God Exist?” with Rawls arguing the ‘yea’ and Anderson debating the ‘nay.’
