Fields Challenges Students to be “Positioned for Peace” During March 3 Chapel

March 3, 2021

Darryl K. Fields, pastor of Union Missionary Baptist Church in Shawnee, delivered the chapel address March 3 in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium. He shared a message titled “Positioned for Peace” from Mark 9.

He encouraged students to hold their peace and remain composed, even when facing people or circumstances which might make that choice a difficult one.

“Sometimes you’re going to have to hold your peace. I know you know it all, but sometimes you're going to have to hold your peace. You know, shouting among the saints subverts the hearers. Hold your peace.”

He also challenged students with the truth that as Christians, we must be last of all and servant of all, submitting ourselves to Christ.

“We have visions of grandeur and greatness, but God’s call is to a cross before you get a crown. Your service is to be rendered in submission, not while you’re reigning supreme. Students, servants and saints, we are indeed to suffer with him if we intend to reign with him.”

Fields was called to his current pastorate in 2010, after serving as youth minister at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Arcadia, Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Luther High School in Luther, Oklahoma, and completed his undergraduate work at the University of Central Oklahoma. He has worked with children extensively throughout his adult life, serving for five years as the administrator of a group home serving delinquent boys. He has served as a juvenile probation and parole officer and has worked for the Office of Juvenile Affairs and the Office of Public Integrity as a compliance auditor/investigator.
