Pianist Kiu Tung Poon Coming to Bison Hill May 7-8 for Residency, Recital

Chinese pianist Kiu Tung Poon will visit OBU May 7 and 8 for a guest artist residency, hosted by the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts Division of Music. Poon will present a piano masterclass, a lecture-demonstration and a recital.

The piano masterclass will be held Tuesday, May 7, at 10 a.m. in Raley Chapel’s Yarborough Auditorium. The lecture-demonstration, titled, “Chinese Contemporary Composers for Piano,” will take place the same day at 12 p.m. in Raley Chapel 203E. Finally, her guest artist recital will take place Wednesday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Yarborough Auditorium. All events are free and open to the public.

Kiu Tung Poon, a Young Steinway Artist, has appeared as recitalist and collaborative pianist on concert stages throughout the United States, Germany, Vienna, France, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. She graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington and the University of Texas at Austin with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance. Her principal mentors have included Cheng Wai, Jean-Louis Haguenauer, Gabriel Kwok and Anton Nel, and she has also worked with Michel Béroff, Claude Frank, Jean-François Heisser, John O’Conor, Garrick Ohlsson, John Perry and Manahem Pressler.

Prior teaching experiences include a resident fellowship at CKY College, University of Macau and an assistantship at the University of Texas at Austin. She currently teaches at her alma mater, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as a lecturer in performance and serves as the performance stream coordinator in the undergraduate program of the music department.

She has appeared at international music festivals such as Tanglewood and Aspen in the United States, Wiener Konzerthaus in Austria, Great Wall in Beijing and Le French May in Hong Kong. An advocate of new music, she has been privileged to work with today’s foremost American composers including John Harbison, George Tsontakis and Dan Welcher, and has premièred with the Penderecki Quartet among others. Her world première of Mark Morris and Samuel Barber’s “Excursions” with the Mark Morris Dance Group at Tanglewood received enthusiastic reviews by critics writing for The New York Times and Boston Phoenix.
