Ed Newton Teaches on Jonah at OBU Chapel Oct. 3

October 3, 2018

Ed Newton, lead pastor of Community Bible Church in San Antonio, Texas, addressed the Oklahoma Baptist University community Wednesday, Oct. 3, during the 10 a.m. service in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium. Newton delivered a message from the book of Jonah. His sermon followed OBU’s chapel theme, “Fully Devoted to Christ: What could God do with one completely yielded soul?”

Newton used Jonah as an example of how not to be completely devoted to Christ. His message challenged students who may not be completely yielded to God. Like Jonah, Newton pointed out that many students find themselves running away from God’s call for one reason or another.

“God will use circumstances in your life to get your attention,” he said.

Newton stressed the importance of continuing in the call of the Lord, even when it may seem tough. He recognized that everyone has a unique call and that they should continue striving toward that call while in school. He wanted students to understand that God wants this so much for them.

“It is theologically impossible to flee the presence of the Lord,” Newton said, “because He is omnipresent.”

No stranger to Christian colleges, Ed Newton is a graduate from Clearwater Christian College where he played basketball and earned a Bachelor of Science in Church Ministries. He then went on to receive a Master in Religious Education from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, and both a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry in Pulpit Communication from Trinity Theological Seminary.
