September 21, 2018
The Shawnee Honor Choir and the Korean Children’s Choir will perform in concert Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium on OBU’s campus in Shawnee. The event is free and open to the public.
The Korean Children’s Choir, with children ranging from ages 7-13, will perform numbers from their 2018 touring program. The choir has performed for audiences around the United States and throughout the world, with their beautiful voices, colorful costumes, skilled choreography and traditional Korean dance. They have performed at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, The Pentagon, Walter Reed Medical Center, and numerous churches, colleges, universities, and music festivals. Their performances include American folk arrangements, patriotic songs, sacred music and hymns, popular music, contemporary Christian songs and Korean traditional songs.
The Korean’s Children Choir is a ministry of the Far East Broadcasting Company in Korea. The broadcasting company was started by Dr. Billy Kim and his wife more than 50 years ago. Kim is a world-renowned evangelist and broadcaster. He will be speaking during OBU’s chapel service Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. in Raley Chapel.
Kim began the Korea radio ministry in 1956 to broadcast the gospel message to North Korea, China, Russia and Mongolia where missionaries were not allowed to travel. Today, FEBC-Korea broadcasts on 10 local FM stations in Korean and two high-powered AM transmitters proclaiming the Gospel in Korean, Chinese, English, Japanese and Russian.
The Shawnee Honor Choir, directed by Dr. Patty Nelson, associate professor of music education, is composed of third through seventh grade students. It is part of OBU’s Music Preparatory Department. The choir will perform four songs, including “Chatter with the Angels,” a Spiritual arranged by Charles Collins; “All the Pretty Little Horses” and “Appalachian Folk Song,” adapted and arranged by Ruth Artman; and “Jazz Cantate” by Andy Beck.
The Korean Children’s Choir will also perform during OBU’s chapel service Wednesday, Sept. 26, in tandem with Kim’s chapel address.
