February 28, 2018
Trillia Newbell, author, speaker and director of community outreach for the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, delivered the chapel message Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Oklahoma Baptist University. Newbell used Mark 12:28-31 to underline the significance of a radical love for God and for others. The service was held in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium on OBU’s campus in Shawnee.
Newbell opened with a reflection on the topic of racial unity and the role believers should take in its discussion.
“Our culture does not have the final word on this topic,” she said. “It does not have the final word on racial harmony. The word of God does.”
Newbell challenged students to reflect their love for God through a genuine love for others.
“Anyone who does not love, does not know God,” she said. “God is love.”
Newbell is the author of the children’s book “God’s Very Good Idea.” She is also the author of “Enjoy: Finding the Freedom to Delight Daily in God’s Good gifts,” “Fear and Faith: Finding the Peace Your Heart Craves” and “United: Captured by God’s Vision for Diversity.”
Her writings on issues of faith, family and diversity have been published in the “Knoxville News Sentinel,” “Desiring God,” “True Woman,” “Christianity Today,” “The Gospel Coalition” and several more. Newbell has spoken at numerous conferences, churches, women’s retreats, colleges and seminaries.
Her greatest love, besides God, is her family. She is married to her best friend and love, Thern. They reside with their two children outside of Nashville.
