OBU Welcomes Stockton Helbing Quintet in Jazz Concert Sept. 29
September 20, 2016
Jazz is coming to Bison Hill for a special evening of music Thursday, Sept. 29. The Stockton Helbing Quintet will present a concert and will be joined on two songs by The Bison Jazz Orchestra. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Yarborough Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public, as part of the OBU Fine Arts Concert Series.
The Stockton Helbing Quintet is a high-energy jazz quintet of professional musicians from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Helbing himself currently tours with Doc Severinsen, teaches at the University of North Texas and is music director at Grace Fellowship Church in Paradise, Texas.
In addition to Helbing on drums, the quintet is comprised of Josh Hanlon on piano, guitarist Noel Johnston, bass player James Driscoll, and David Lown on Saxophone.
Since 2007, Helbing has owned and operated Armored Records, an independent jazz record label that focuses on releases by up and coming jazz artists. To date, Armored Records has released more than 50 albums from artists coast to coast.
“Stockton is a consummate and articulate artist, having performed around the globe with world-class musicians,” says Justin Pierce, assistant professor of instrumental music and director of the Bison Jazz Orchestra. “Our students will greatly benefit from his artistic and business insights, drawn from a Christian worldview.”
Saturday, Oct. 29, the Bison Jazz Orchestra will host another night of music during the Night of Jazz, following Freshmen Follies. The orchestra will be joined by B3 organist and drummer, Jeremy Thomas.
