OBU Theatre to Stage ‘A Season for All’
September 7, 2016
OBU Theatre will take patrons through “A Season for All” during the 2016-17 theatre season. The season will feature the New Works Festival, the One Act Play Festival and productions of "You Can’t Take it With You" and “Eleemosynary.” Tickets for the “New Works Festival” will be available at the door, and tickets for the remaining productions may be purchased online beginning Sept. 15.
The New Works Festival will kick off the 2016-17 OBU Theatre season Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Sarkeys Black Box Theatre on OBU’s campus. OBU College Players will present an evening of short plays written and directed by OBU students. These plays are presented in “workshop” format, with attention placed on the audience hearing the written word rather than upon viewing spectacle. Tickets are free for season ticket holders, $5 for adults and $3 for students.
“You Can’t Take it with You,” by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, will hit the stage Nov. 3, 4, 5 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 5, 6 and 13 at 2:30 p.m. These productions, directed by Matthew Caron, assistant professor of theatre, will take place in OBU’s Craig-Dorland Theatre. In this madcap classic comedy, the Sycamore family seems unstable. One member of the family is making fireworks in the basement, another has a printing press in the parlor, while others pursue dancing, painting and playing the xylophone in the living room. However, their routine is disrupted when daughter Alice brings her fiancé and his high society family to dinner. The audience is in for a wild ride as these two highly diverse families try to get along. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5 for students.
The spring semester will kick off with the One Act Play Festival in OBU’s Sarkeys Black Box Theatre. Productions will take place Feb. 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 12 at 2:30 p.m. OBU Theatre will present an entertaining and eclectic array of one-act plays. Student playwrights and directors will join in alongside faculty to bring these three pieces to life during this night of insight and amusement. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5 for students.
Lee Blessing’s “Eleemosynary” will close out the 2016-17 theatre season. Directed by OBU student Connor Gilbert, the production of “Eleemosynary” will take place in OBU’s Craig-Dorland Theatre April 27, 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. and April 29 and 30 at 2:30 p.m. Eleemosynary, a word rarely heard outside of spelling bees, means “related to charity, charitable.” This play probes into the intricate relationship of three women in a broken matriarchy. The audience is invited to join these women on a compelling journey as they live and re-live their relationships while coming to a personal understanding of the word charity. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5 for students.
Tickets may be purchased online beginning Sept. 15, or two weeks before each performance at Sarkeys Telecommunication Center on OBU’s campus. Season tickets will be available for $30 for adults and $12 for students. Call (405) 585-4350 for more information.
