July 1, 2016
OBU has named Odus Compton as dean of students. Compton currently serves the University as director of student ministry. His role as dean of students will take effect July 5.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from OBU with a minor in religion. He then earned a Master of Divinity with biblical languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Compton assumed his current position of director of student ministry in 2010, following his role as director of church relations, which he filled from 2008-10. He previously served OBU as the Baptist Student Union director and director of religious activities from 1989-2002. Following his graduation from OBU in 1987, he served as BSU director at Maui Community College in Hawaii before returning to Bison Hill.
Compton has owned and operated three companies, including Heritage Property Holdings in Norman, Oklahoma; a commercial landscape management business; and Compton and Son’s Property Management Company. He has served on the Super Summer Oklahoma board, including two terms as president. He is active in preaching and teaching at various Oklahoma Baptist churches, conferences and events.
“Oklahoma Baptist University is blessed to welcome Odus Compton to his new role as dean of students,” said OBU President Dr. David W. Whitlock. “Odus has served this university and its students faithfully for more than two decades. His dedication to excellence and his love and compassion for our students shines through in everything he does. We congratulate him on this promotion and are excited to see how God will continue to use his life to touch so many others on Bison Hill.”
Dr. Stan Norman, provost and executive vice president for campus life, is pleased to welcome Compton to his new role. “Odus Compton embodies so many of the fine qualities this university seeks in our leadership. He is a man of sincere faith and a man of dedication. His work ethic and love for this university are apparent in everything he does. He has a heart for the students of OBU and desires above all else to see them grow and thrive during their time on Bison Hill. We are excited to welcome him to the role of dean of students and we look forward to the many ways he will impact our student body as he serves in this capacity.”
Compton is ready to assume his new role and is excited for what the future holds.
"I'm very excited to be able to serve the university that I love in this new capacity,” he said. “The opportunity to be a part of leading the incredible student development staff as we seek to educate, encourage and empower our students alongside our amazing faculty is a dream job. OBU has a longstanding reputation for excellence in and out of the classroom, and I count it a privilege to build upon that reputation."
Compton and his wife, Paula, a 1989 OBU alumna, have eight children and one grandchild. They are active members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee.
