OBU Welcomes Jeremy Scott as Campus Photographer
June 29, 2016
OBU recently welcomed Jeremy Scott to campus as the University’s photographer. He assumed the role June 6.
Scott served as a photographer for the International Mission Board from 2010 to 2016, first serving as a studio photographer and imaging specialist, then as photographer I. He has also done freelance photography work since 2004. His role at the IMB took him around the world, shooting images from the heart of the mission field. From 2004-08, he spent a total of 17 months teaching English as a second language in South Korea.
He earned a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in business management from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. He likewise completed work toward a Master of Fine Art in photography at the University of Memphis. It was during the final semester of his undergraduate study that Scott discovered his passion for photography.
“I was a music major and I took a photography class my very last semester before I graduated. I thought, ‘This is what I'm supposed to be doing.’” He threw himself into studying and working in photography, finding fulfillment in his new calling. He also sought guidance from Jim Veneman, who was the photographer at Union at the time and is currently at California Baptist University.
Scott learned about the position at OBU from a former colleague, Julie McGowan, public relations leader at the IMB. She is an OBU alumna and previously worked in the university’s marketing and communications office. Having attended Union University, he was familiar with the Baptist higher education atmosphere and culture, and was excited about the potential for serving at a Baptist university.
“I'm really looking forward to the variety of things I get to cover,” he said. “With sports, theatre and all sorts of things happening, there is so much to shoot on such a beautiful campus.”
Another passion is collecting cameras of all types, with a collection of more than 100 cameras and counting. His cameras nearly span the history of photography, including Kodak box cameras that are over a hundred years old and numerous 35mm cameras. He started his collection as a college student and it has grown through the years.
When not working, he enjoys spending time with friends and family and also enjoys rock climbing. Likewise, he loves to travel, take road trips, and visit new places, with has camera always on the ready for that perfect shot of something different or unique.
