April 21, 2016
Oklahoma Baptist University student Erin Wilson will debut her senior art show Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m. in the Art Building located on OBU’s campus in Shawnee. A reception will be held in honor of Wilson and her work and will serve as the opening to the exhibit. The event is come and go and is free to the public.
A senior graphic design major from Del City, Oklahoma, Wilson’s work has been featured in Momentum Tulsa and Momentum OKC, prestigious events exhibiting work of Oklahoma artists under the age of 30. She also received an Addy Award from the local chapter of the American Advertising Federation for a poster design. These acclaimed works will be displayed alongside drawings, paintings, weavings and designs she has created during here time at OBU.
Wilson has decided to forgo constraining her show to a certain theme or motif.
“I don’t have a theme for my show,” she said. “I found the idea of ‘naming’ my show to be very limiting and distracting. Instead, I want my work to speak for itself.”
She has drawn artistic inspiration both from famous artists and her time spent on Bison Hill.
“I was definitely influenced by Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait series when working on a series of my own,” she said. “At OBU, my professors Corey Fuller, Julie Blackstone and Chris Owens have each taught me so much about art and design. They have helped me grow as an artist. I have become stronger and gained a better work ethic and sense of discipline during my time at OBU. Because I started out as an art major, I had a lot to learn in graphic design.”
Following graduation, she plans to start her career as a graphic designer while working as a freelance artist. In the future, she intends to continue her education by pursuing a graduate degree in illustration for graphic design.
