Hollingshead Named 2016 Newman Civic Fellow
April 12, 2016
Campus Compact recently named Anna Hollingshead, a sophomore nursing major at OBU from Denton, Texas, a 2016 Newman Civic Fellow. The Newman Civic Fellows class of 2016 is made up of 218 student leaders representing Campus Compact member colleges and universities from 36 states, Washington, DC, and Mexico.
The award honors the late Frank Newman, who co-founded Campus Compact with the presidents of Stanford University, Brown University, and Georgetown University to foster students’ involvement in public service and as democratic change-agents. Campus Compact has since grown to represent more than 1,100 college and university presidents committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education.
"First and foremost, I'm so humbled and thankful to receive this award,” Hollingshead said. “My whole life, I've clung to the command in John 13:34 – that we are to love others because Christ has loved us first. There is no better way to show Christ's love than by serving. Receiving this award has further deepened my desire to minister.”
In a letter of nomination, OBU President Dr. David W. Whitlock said, “Ms. Hollingshead has demonstrated a passion for service beginning while still in high school. She served in a homeless shelter through most of her high school years. This ignited a passion for serving people in need.”
He continued by detailing the many ministries and people groups she has served, including addressing the needs of women in sex-trafficking and preparing to serve on a medical outreach to Indonesia.
Hollingshead is humbled and honored to represent OBU as a Newman Civic Fellow.
“I'm thankful to my parents for teaching me what it means to be a public servant, to President Whitlock for his nomination, but most importantly, to Jesus Christ, for setting the ultimate example of how to truly and selflessly love others," she said.
The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research and advocacy, Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the support of the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
Campus Compact 2016 Newman Civic Fellows will represent their higher education institution in a national group of student leaders. These students will receive an award certificate and an invitation to join the Newman Civic Fellows online network. They will also be featured prominently on the Campus Compact national website and, in many cases, invited to participate in state-specific activities.
