Tompkins Receives OBU’s J.M. Carroll Award
November 11, 2015
Mike Tompkins, director of missions for the Comanche-Cotton Baptist Association in Lawton, Oklahoma, received the J.M. Carroll Award from Oklahoma Baptist University during the annual meeting of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma Nov. 10. The meeting took place at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.
OBU presents the award in honor of Dr. J.M. Carroll, the first president of the Baptist University of Oklahoma. The award is given in recognition of outstanding denominational service in the state of Oklahoma.
“It is my privilege to present the J.M. Carroll Award to Mike Tompkins, a longtime pastor, director of missions and champion for the cause of Christ in the state of Oklahoma,” said OBU President Dr. David W. Whitlock. “It is an honor to recognize this strong leader with a servant’s heart.”
Tompkins began his fulltime service to the Lord in student ministry, serving in churches in Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi, before arriving in Oklahoma in 1974 to serve on staff at Harmony Community Church in Guthrie. From there, God called him to the pulpit, where he pastored four churches in Oklahoma, located in El Reno, Leedey, Oklahoma City, and Fletcher. Then, in 1996, the Lord moved him to be the director of missions for the Comanche-Cotton Baptist Association, where he still serves today.
He has led “Thrive” trainings at both the state and associational level and has previously served on the Board of Trustees at OBU. He helped launch a ministry through the association that collects food for lower ranked military families at Ft. Sill. He has also served on the State Children’s Camp Committee at Falls Creek since 1996.
He has led many Sunday School conferences across the state and has served as an interim pastor in numerous churches. He led the association to sponsor a new church start in Arizona in 2000, and has led the association in starting 21 new churches since 1997.
