OBU Hosts Area Fifth Graders for Interactive Children’s Museum
November 12, 2015
OBU teacher education students hosted OBU’s interactive children’s museum Nov. 11 on the OBU campus in Shawnee. This semester’s edition was titled “Coming to America: A Study of Immigration from 1892-1930.” Fifth graders from Grove Elementary School in Shawnee were guests for the event.
This was the 33rd interactive children’s museum held at OBU. At the event, students learn through activities created by OBU teacher education majors. The popular event was created by elementary education majors in the “Methods of Teaching Social Studies” class taught by Dr. Jeanne Akin, Mary A. White professor of education. This is a biannual event, held in the fall and the spring.
The OBU students created an interactive museum telling the story of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Italy and Russia. The fifth graders learned about the immigrants’ homelands and what prompted them to immigrate to the United States. The OBU students included the many rich traditions and contributions these immigrants brought to the United States.
The students involved in the creation of the museum were Rebecca Tyler, Tessa Toyer, Sabra Edwards, Kaitlen Wiens, Kristen Lee, Morgan Groves, Katelyn Fritz, Tori Rivera and Carey Strong.
