OBU Announces 2015 Chapel Theme, Fall Speakers
August 25, 2015
OBU's 2015 Chapel Series will focus on the theme "The Minor Prophets: Twelve Contemporary Messages from the Living Text of the Old Testament." Throughout the series, each speaker will walk through the life of different Minor Prophets and what messages they shared with the people of Israel.
Despite their description, these prophets were not minor at all. Each prophet declared a specific, special message from the Lord, and their divine duty bound them to share it no matter the odds. Even though these messages are thousands of years old, God's words never lose their power. Christians can still learn lessons from these prophecies to this very day.
The fall semester chapel schedule begins with OBU's annual Convocation, held Aug. 26.
Dr. Tom Elliff, former president of the International Mission Board, will begin the series on the Minor Prophets Sept. 2 with a message on Jonah. Dr. Bobby Kelly, professor of religion, will interpret the theme on Sept. 9. Other faculty speakers include, Dr. Alan Bandy, Sept. 16; Dr. Scott Pace, Sept. 23; Dr. Galen Jones, Oct. 7; and Dr. Louima Lilite, Oct. 14. They will speak on the prophets Habakkuk, Nahum, Obadiah, and Amos.
Sept. 30 will feature Stephen Kendrick, of Kendrick Brothers production company. He is an author, speaker, and filmmaker, along with his brother, Alex. Together, they have created such powerful Christian films as "Courageous," "Fireproof," "Facing the Giants," "Flywheel," and the new film "War Room."
On Oct. 21, Dr. Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, will present the Hobbs Lecture. Mohler is a renowned theologian and author. The following week, Caz McCaslin, with the Upward Center for Sports Ministry, will lead the Wednesday chapel service.
Guest speaker Guy Grimes will continue the Minor Prophets series Nov. 4, as he explores Hosea. Ed Newton, Staff Evangelist at FBC Central Florida, will speak Nov. 11 on the prophet Zephaniah. Rosaria Butterfield, a former tenured professor of English at Syracuse University, will speak in chapel on Nov. 18.
The fall chapel series will conclude Dec. 2 with the annual Christmas Chapel.
