OBU Theatre to Present "Radium Girls" March 27-29
March 12, 2015
OBU Theatre will present "Radium Girls" March 27-29. The production, written by D.W. Gregory, continues the 2014-15 theatre theme, "A Season of Fragile Innocence." Tickets are on sale now
The show makes its OBU debut in Sarkeys Black Box Theater March 27 at 7:30 p.m. March 28 will have two performances, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. The last showing will be March 29 at 2:30 p.m.
"Radium Girls," tells the story of Grace Fryer, a woman who fell ill after working in a factory where she painted watch dials with radium, as she fights for her day in court. The saga holds an important place in the history of both the field of health physics and the labor rights movement. The right of individual workers to sue for damages from corporations due to labor abuse was established as a result of the Radium Girls case.
Carly Conklin, director of OBU's "Radium Girls," is excited about the chance to present the production. "What's interesting about Radium Girls is that it's based on an actual historical event. The bravery of these women is extraordinary, and I hope that members of the audience who have felt that sort of oppression can find inspiration and empowerment through this story."
Dr. Jeffrey Wells, associate professor of theatre and division chair of communication arts, expounded on the power of this season's productions. "The meaningful nature of this season's productions is both exciting and remarkable. While spanning eras, topics, and genres, these works remind us of innocence as a human condition and the fragility of that beautiful stage of life."
The cast for the production includes Brenna Bergeron, Haylee Dowler, Conner Gilbert, Christian Givens, Brayden Lans, Taylor Lasseigne, Nina Longhofer, Cherish Parker, Tony Quintana, Scott Roberts and Kymber Sage.
"I am so proud of the work the students have poured into this amazing story," Conklin said. "A play like this is emotionally taxing on the actors, who feel an immense burden to bring courage, strength and vivacity to the individuals they're portraying. I am inspired by all the individuals involved with the production."
"Much Ado About Nothing," by William Shakespeare, kicked off the season in November, while "The Glass Menagerie," by Tennessee Williams will end the theatre season with shows April 30-May 2.
Tickets to "Radium Girls" are now on sale and are $11 for adults and $5 for students.
