A native Texan, Shaddix came to know Jesus Christ at the age of nine. After graduating from high school, he attended Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. In college, he responded to God's calling to preach. After graduating from Jacksonville State, he married Debra Gail Joyner and the two moved to Ft. Worth, Texas. He began working toward his Master of Divinity Degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS), which he received in 1986. He earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from SBTS six years later.

The congregation grew from four people to more than three hundred members in small group Bible studies and multiple worship services. In 1993, his family moved to Picayune, Mississippi, where he served as pastor of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. Meanwhile, he was also working on his Doctor of Philosophy in Preaching at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS). He began teaching preaching at NOBTS in 1994 and was elected to the faculty in 1995. One year later, he completed his degree.
In 1997, he and his wife founded Burning Heart Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit ministry organization focused on, "equipping pastors and students in the practice of biblical exposition."
In late 2004, he was called to pastor Riverside Baptist Church located in downtown Denver, Colorado.
He is the author of two books, "Power in the Pulpit with Jerry Vines," and "The Passion Driven Sermon." Jim and his wife focus much of their attention on discipling and mentoring young leaders and their spouses. They have three grown children, Clint, Shane and Dallys, and reside in Birmingham, Alabama.
