SEBTS President Akin to Speak at OBU Chapel

Dr. Daniel L. Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, will present OBU's chapel message Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. in Raley Chapel's Potter Auditorium. He will continue the fall 2014 chapel series theme of "Parables of the Kingdom: Jesus' Word Pictures as Found in the Gospel of Luke." His message will be on the "Parables of the Lost Sheep and Coin" from Luke 15:1-10.
In addition to his duties as President of SEBTS, he is also professor of preaching and theology and the Ed Young, Sr. Chair of Expository Preaching. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from The Criswell College in 1980; his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1983; and his Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1989.
He became Southeastern's sixth president in 2004. He previously served at Southeastern as assistant professor of theology and dean of students from 1992-96. He then served as vice-president for academic administration / dean of the School of Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, until he returned to Southeastern.
His pastoral experience includes serving 10 churches in Texas, Florida, Alabama and Virginia in both interim and full-time capacities. He has also edited and authored numerous articles and books including "A Theology for the Church," the 40-volume Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series on the entire Bible; "1,2,3 John" (New American Commentary), "Ecclesiastes/Song of Songs" (Holman Old Testament Commentary), and "Engaging Exposition."
Earlier this year, OBU presented Akin with the Herschel H. Hobbs Award for Distinguished Denominational Service. The presentation was made June 11 during the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.
Known as an advocate for international missions and expository preaching, Akin has a reputation as a faithful husband and father and genuine man of God. He is admired and respected by many Southern Baptists for his dedication to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his commitment to teach and proclaim His Word.
He has been married to his wife, Charlotte, for 36 years. They have four sons who all currently serve in the Christian ministry, along with three daughters-in-law and 10 grandchildren. They have traveled to Sudan, Turkey, Middle East, Kenya, Asia, Central Asia, Thailand, India and Paraguay serving our students and missionaries and helping share the gospel.
