OBU Welcomes Stewart as Guest Lecturer Oct. 13-14
October 8, 2014
OBU will host Dr. Robert B. Stewart for a series of lectures and seminars Oct. 13-14. Stewart, professor of philosophy and theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary as well as the Greer-Heard Chair of Faith and Culture at NOBTS, will present three public lectures and seminars. The events will take place on the OBU campus in Shawnee.
The first of his seminars, "Engaging the New Atheism," will begin Monday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m. in the Mabee Suite of the Noble Complex. The session is scheduled to last until 5:15 p.m. and is described as an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and responding to perspectives and arguments of prominent figures in the "New Atheism" movement. "New Atheism" is a more evangelistic brand of non-belief that challenges Christian beliefs of truth, its rationality, and the benefits of Christian belief. Stewart will explore the positions and arguments involved, and will point to helpful Christian responses from different academic disciplines.
His second presentation is titled, "The Fate of the Unevangelized: What happens to those who never hear of Jesus." OBU's Philosophy Department is sponsoring the event which will take place Monday, Oct. 13, from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The event will also take place in the Mabee Suite. "The Fate of the Unevangelized" details the evangelical perspective of this age-old philosophical and theological question.
Stewart's final lecture, "Exclusivism, Inclusivism and Universalism: Who will Be Saved?" will begin at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Tulsa Royalties Auditorium located in OBU's Bailey Business Center. The lecture, sponsored by the OBU Philosophy Department, is a follow-up to Monday evening's lecture on those not reached by Christ.
Stewart earned his bachelor's degree in music performance in 1980 from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. He went on to achieve a Master of Divinity with biblical languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1992. In 2000, he received his Ph.D. in theology from SWBTS.
Over his career, he has published numerous books and journal articles concerning living with the truth of Christianity. He has served as pastor and interim pastor at many different churches in the New Orleans area and in Texas.
