July 22, 2014
OBU and Immanuel Baptist Church, Shawnee, will host Keith and Kristyn Getty in concert Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. The event will take place in Raley Chapel's Potter Auditorium on the OBU campus, located at 500 West University in Shawnee. The evening of worship is part of the "Hymns for the Christian Life" tour and will feature the Getty's full Celtic band and a 100-voice choir of singers from area churches. Tickets are on sale now.
Heralded as modern hymn writers, Keith and Kristyn Getty are known for writing and performing songs that transcend traditional church boundaries, uniting the voices of people all over the world. With music that is equally at home in urban strip-mall chapels, the ancient stonewalled Canterbury Cathedral, Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium and London's Royal Albert Hall, they occupy a different space in the Christian music community.
The renowned Keith Getty and Stuart Townend hymn, "In Christ Alone," has remained the most popular song for congregations throughout the UK for seven years, among CCLI's top 10 in North America, and has been honored by both the British Hymn Society and BBC Songs of Praise all time lists. Their hymns are sung by congregations large and small, performed by choirs of every description, and have been recorded by artists throughout the world of music, including country artists Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs; Irish musicians Moya Brenan and Anuna; contemporary Christian artists Natalie Grant, Newsboys and Tim Hughes; and Aida's Heather Headley, as well as a recent online recording by Owl City.
Under the Getty Music label, Keith and Kristyn have recorded five albums to critical acclaim: In Christ Alone (2007), Awaken the Dawn (2009), Joy-An Irish Christmas (2011), Hymns for the Christian Life (2012, produced by Charlie Peacock and Ed Cash), and Live at The Gospel Coalition (2013, produced by Ed Cash). The broad appeal of their recordings has led to chart-topping success on radio as well as multiple television appearances and specials. Additionally, Getty Music has initiated a number of choral works based on each of these projects.
The Gettys have shared their music at the United States Pentagon, the GMA Dove Awards, Franklin Graham crusades, for President George W. Bush, at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and in the noted symphony halls of the U.S. and U.K. They have spoken at universities from Harvard to Wheaton and remain involved in conferences including the Lausanne Congress and The Gospel Coalition. Between their annual Joy-An Irish Christmas concert tour and U.S. and U.K. tours of Hymns for the Christian Life, the Gettys personally lead more than 100,000 people per year in singing their hymns.
Keith and Kristyn divide their time between Northern Ireland and their home in Nashville where they write, tour and oversee the work of Getty Music.
