OBU Announces Achievement for Alumni Teachers
February 28, 2014
OBU recently announced 49 of its alumni have achieved the distinction of becoming National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT). Oklahoma ranks ninth in the nation in the number of NBCTs.
To achieve National Board Certification, teachers must demonstrate advanced knowledge in teaching, advanced teaching skills and a mastery of practices within the profession. National Board Certification is a voluntary way for teachers to go above and beyond what is required of them and to be recognized for their excellence within the teaching profession.
"The achievement of attaining National Board certification serves to demonstrate the caliber of the OBU teacher education graduate," said Dr. Pam Robinson, OBU associate provost and dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. "Graduates leave OBU as reflective practitioners able to effectively facilitate learning in all students."
The announcement of OBU's NBCTs comes at a time when graduates of the university's teacher education division are on the rise. In 2011, 32 students completed the program, with 41 completing in 2012. In 2013, 47 students graduated and completed the program. Currently there are 219 teacher education majors, and OBU students boast a high pass rate on their competency exams.
