Career Development Has New Name but Same Purpose
February 28, 2014
OBU's Career Services recently changed many aspects of its program including its name, a personnel change and a website re-design. Career Services is now known as Career Development. Though the name may be a little different, the purpose remains the same: "providing career assessment services and information concerning vocational opportunities for students and alumni."
In 2013, OBU welcomed Marissa Lightsey as director of Career Development. Lightsey expressed a desire to become a central hub for all OBU affiliated people -- wherever they may be in their careers -- as well as to connect with employers for potential job opportunities.
The purpose of the OBU Career Development Office is to provide students with helpful tools as they enter the workplace. They provide career assessment services and information concerning vocational opportunities for students and alumni. While not a "placement service," OBU Career Development effectively equips students with the necessary skills to prepare for life beyond OBU.
"Our office provides career exploration services, resume and cover letter help, interview training, professional development, and professional and graduate school application help," Lightsey said. "We can help graduates and alumni connect to industry leaders for the purpose of securing a position where they can utilize their talents."
Through the Career Development website, students will find checklists for the career process specific to their academic year, as well as other job tools, resources, career fair events and presentations. The website includes relevant information for international students, graduate students, undergraduates, parents, employers and alumni, and it exists to serve the OBU community in their career efforts.
