Richard Allen Farmer to Bring Chapel Music, Message

OBU will welcome musician and lecturer Richard Allen Farmer in the first weekly chapel service of the 2013 spring semester on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. in Raley Chapel's Potter Auditorium. The community is invited to attend the hour-long service.

Farmer will sing, accompanying himself on the piano, and then speak on the Scripture passage found in Psalm 78:1-3. His message will continue OBU's 2012-13 chapel theme, "The Psalms."

Farmer was born in New York City and now resides in Dallas, Texas, with his wife, Rosemary, and their son, Timothy. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from Nyack College in 1975 and a master of divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1980. An experienced pastor and college chaplain, Farmer served as senior pastor of Bethany Baptist Church in Pittsburgh from 1980-88 and as dean of the Chapel at both Gordon College (1988-92) and Taylor University (1999-2002).

On the lighter side, Farmer is an animal lover, having owned six monkeys, a chimpanzee, a ferret and a colony of 26 hamsters. He is a certified scuba diver, a motorcyclist, a Segway rider and an instrument-rated airplane pilot.

Farmer has lectured or given concerts in England, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Peru, Cote d'lvoire, Kenya, Gabon, Chile, Aruba, Canada, Haiti, France, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and most of the United States.
