Eight Students Featured in Annual Concerto-Aria Concert

A pre-concert lecture will be held at 5 p.m. in Raley Chapel room 203E. During the pre-concert lecture, OBU students will introduce the selections to be performed during the concert along with background information to assist the audience in listening to the event.

Featured on this year's program are eight outstanding student performers, chosen by audition in December 2012. Four vocalists will be featured. Joy Knight, a junior vocal performance and English major from North Richland Hills, Texas, will perform "Ah! Je ris de me voir" from "Faust" by Gounod. Bailee Rogers, a sophomore vocal performance major from Bixby, Okla., will perform "Bester Jungling" from "Der Schauspieldirektor" by Mozart. Sarah Stephens, a senior vocal performance major from Tulsa, Okla., will perform "Je suis Titania" from "Mignon" by Thomas. Elizabeth Youngblood, a senior vocal performance major from Midwest City, Okla., will perform the aria "Augusta! How Can You Turn Away?" from "The Ballad of Baby Doe" by Douglas Moore.

Four OBU instrumentalists also will be featured: Sadie Elliott, a sophomore piano performance major from Oklahoma City, Okla., will perform the first movement of the Mendelssohn "Concerto in G Minor, Op. 25" for piano and orchestra. Emily Eubanks, a sophomore instrumental music performance major from Harrah, Okla., will perform the Mercandante "Concerto in Mi Minore for Flute and Orchestra." Chelsea McQuigg, a senior music arts major from Miami, Okla., will perform the Hanson "Serenade for Flute, Harp and Strings." Completing the program will be a performance of the third movement of the Hummel "Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat Major" by Morganne Garcia, a junior music education major from Rogers, Ark.

The conductor of the concert is Dr. James Vernon, professor of music at OBU. Vernon teaches courses in music composition, music theory and fine arts. He also serves as musical director of The Bisonettes, OBU's Women's Glee Club.
