Alum Betty Sexton Publishes Poetry
September 18, 2009
An original poem by Betty Sexton, a 1951 Oklahoma Baptist University graduate, recently was published in Mature Living, a magazine for senior adults published by LifeWay Christian Resources.
Sexton attended OBU from 1946 to January 1951, earning her bachelor's degree in English with a minor in speech. She has been published several times by LifeWay and Sunshine publications, and twice by the National Enquirer.
Her poem, "Friends," was featured in the August 2009 issue of Mature Living. The poem reads:
One gives the gift of comfort,
While another may lovingly chide.
One shares the art of listening,
And another may skillfully guide.
One opens a loving heart
And brings peace in a troubling storm.
Friends all, they personify Jesus
In the purest Christian form.
"I was inspired to write the piece, 'Friends,' while on a road trip as I contemplated the different roles that friends have played and continue to play in my life," Sexton said. "Mature Living has been very kind to publish much of my writings."
Sexton resides in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she is an active member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoys working crossword puzzles as well as craft sewing. She also volunteers at her church where she is active in several ministries.
