Science Experiment Yields Success
June 18, 2008
Gathering for a one-day science camp, more than 50 people participated in the spring meeting of the Oklahoma Baptist University Legacy Society.
The May 1 event at the Science Museum of Oklahoma featured a lecture by OBU graduate and retired NASA astronaut William Pogue, a tour of the museum's "Our Body" exhibit, and an array of other highlights.
"We designed a day to come together and enjoy an outstanding facility while also learning from OBU alumni and friends," said John Little, OBU director of estate and gift planning. "It was a great experience and we are looking forward to our next Legacy Society event in the fall."
Col. Pogue, a 1951 OBU graduate, was one of 19 astronauts selected by NASA in 1966. He was pilot of Skylab 4 and spent nearly three months in space from November 1973 to February 1974. Along with his lecture, participants also heard from Dr. Brad Jett, OBU's Hurley associate professor of biology, who discussed how the sciences are taught at on the campus and noted accomplishments of recent graduates.
The Science Museum also provided lectures by the Wayne Harris-Wyrick, director of the planetarium, and by Cheryl Neal, the museum's director of education. A 1983 OBU graduate, Neal was able to reunite with one of her favorite professors, Max Brattin. OBU's longtime economics professor was part of the group participating in the event.
