Lady Bison Roll Past JBU
February 5, 2008
Taujhnae Travis didn't want to be the show, but she was in the spotlight coming off the bench Tuesday night, scoring 21 points and leading Oklahoma Baptist to a 79-54 rout of John Brown.
Travis shot 56 percent form the field and canned 10 of 13 free throws in her Noble Complex debut, to go with four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
"I told coach 'I don't want to do anything big, I just want to be a part of something special,'" Travis said after the game. "These girls are great. I'm having so much fun."
Travis scored three baskets on athletic drives finished with acrobatic moves to get the ball in the air, adding another weapon to an OBU team that already leads the league in scoring offense.
"If (drives) are what they give me, I'll take it," Travis said.
"Tauj did a good job and gave us a lift defensively," said coach John McCullough.
OBU never trailed, but didn't pull away very quickly. The Lady Bison used five points and three assist from Ashley Gamble in a 17-5 run to take a 28-16 lead with 4:21 left in the game and OBU had a 35-24 lead at the half.
John Brown got to within six points in the second half, but OBU would score in spurts of four, six, eight and 10 points to quietly build a 77-50 lead with a minute to play.
"Things were kind of sloppy until the last 10 minutes of the game," McCullough said. "We got a good effort from Betsy Simmons and Heather Graham inside, but John Brown clogs things up inside and it was tough. But in the minutes that count, we stepped up and got it done."
Gamble finished with 15 points and four assists, Simmons had 11 points and nine rebounds and Graham came up with 10 points and seven boards.
Staffica Bain led JBU with 11 points.
Now 19-2 overall and 11-2 in the SAC, OBU is now tied for second, a game and a half back of Oklahoma City. The Lady Bison host Oklahoma Christian Thursday night.
