Bison Knock Off Rogers State
February 28, 2008
Oklahoma Baptist went into Thursday night's game in a log jam tie for fourth place and emerged with a 69-56 win over Rogers State that put them on the up-side of a tie for third.
OBU's win, coupled with Oklahoma City's win at Northwestern and Southern Nazarene's win at Wayland Baptist, pushed the Bison out of the tie with NWOSU and RSU and into a tie for third place with Wayland Baptist.
A win Saturday at John Brown would make the Bison the third seed in the SAC Tournament. OBU split with Wayland Baptist, but has the tiebreaker, based on a win over Oklahoma City University.
Rogers State came into the game with three wins in their last four road games, but the Bison had the answer on Senior Night - sending seniors Evan Grace, Brian Hill and Jamar Fortune out with a bang.
"This was as good a win as we've had in a couple of years," said OBU coach Doug Tolin. "Our guys really came out and played well. Defensively, we did a great job."
The Bison held Rogers State to its third-lowest point total of the season.
"We were plus-10 on our turnovers (17-7) and that's huge for us," Tolin said. "I thought taking care of the ball was very important."
Brent Jones led the Bison with 23 points, stepping up at the right time for the Bison.
"This was a real big win," said Jones. "We came out and played for our seniors. It was good to get the win for them. I'm happy I got to play with them. They've taught me a lot."
OBU never trailed in the game after Hill and Al Moore gave OBU a 4-0 lead in the first 61 seconds. The Bison opened up a nine-point lead with a 7-0 run capped by a dunk by Jones.
OBU carried a 33-26 lead into halftime.
RSU cut OBU's lead to four, but Grace answered with a three-pointer to begin a 8-2 run - the latter five points coming from Jones for a 44-34 lead with 15:08 left.
The Bison built the lead up to 16 points after a 6-0 run, capped by a dunk by Charles Carter with 4:48 left in the game.
Joining Jones in double figures were Hill and Moore with 13 each. Moore also had a game-high nine boards.
Now 21-8 overall and 13-8 in the SAC, the Bison play at John Brown Saturday at 3 p.m.
