Lady Bison Knock Off Wayland Baptist
January 26, 2008
It was a game of spurts Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bison outlasted Wayland Baptist 68-57 in Plainview.
The beginning of the game saw little separation between the two teams, with WBU having several leads. Their biggest lead was 20-16 and then the Lady Bison caught fire, using an 11-2 run to take the lead. Fifth-ranked OBU then closed the half with a 10-1 run with three-pointers coming from Jennifer Jupin and Tanna Truelove and took a 37-27 difference into the break.
Wayland cut the lead to 42-40 at the 15:41 mark. Betsy Simmons hit a free throw then the next four OBU baskets came from long range, two from Jayme Glover and two from Ashley Gamble and expanded the lead to 55-42. But then Wayland scored the next 13 to tie the game on a Katie Benton free throw with 5:40 to go.
"When you're on the road, this is what happens," said OBU coach John McCullough.
The Lady Bison answered with 9 straight points and Gamble continued her hot three-point shooting.
She went 4-6 on the day from the field, all from long range in the second half for her 12 points.
"The last five minutes we ran some nice sets and they executed really well," said McCullough.
Heather Graham lead the Lady Bison with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Keely Tolin scored all 12 of her points in the first half.
On the defensive end, Simmons got a season high seven blocks, helping the Lady Bison hold WBU to 33.9 percent shooting.
Halfway through the Sooner Athletic Conference season, the Lady Bison move to 9-2 and 17-2 overall. Thursday, OBU will host John Brown at 6 p.m.
