Oklahoma Baptist University's Bison soccer team went to overtime with St. Gregory's for a second time this season, this time claiming a 3-2 overtime victory in the opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament at OBU Saturday.
Elijah Mwansanga, using a feed from Marcos Silva, banged home the golden goal in the 97th minute, sending OBU into a home semifinal match against USAO Tuesday at 2 p.m. USAO defeated Oklahoma Christian in a 1-0 shoot-out to advance.
The Bison played short-handed for most of the game as Nickson Odeny was assessed a red card in the 24th minute.
OBU went ahead 1-0 in the 26th minute on a free kick goal by Adauto Oliveira.
Matias Menis of St. Gregory's was fouled in the box and scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, knotting the game at 1-1.
Silva scored with an assist from Pablo Campos in the 65th minute to give the Bison a 2-1 edge, but Alejandro Munin goaled for the Cavaliers in the 72nd minute and forced the overtime period.
The Cavaliers lost their advantage when Juan Goyochea was given a second yellow card with 24 seconds left in regulation.
OBU keeper Joao Acedo allowed two goals but collected saves on three one-on-one Cavalier opportunities in regulation. Acedo had eight saves for the game.
St. Gregory's, who went winless in the SAC season, out-shot OBU 18-12 for the game. Robert McKnight had four saves for the Cavaliers.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the regular season, combining for 66 fouls in two overtimes. Saturday's game had 57 fouls.
The Sooner Athletic Conference charges admission of $5 for adults and $3 for students.
