OBU Stays Alive in ITA Regional

Peter McCorkle of Oklahoma Baptist scored the second-biggest upset of the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's regional tournament in Shawnee Friday.
McCorkle knocked off Anibal Aranda of the College of Santa Fe, 7-5, 7-5, in the first round of men's singles action. Aranda is ranked 15th in the NAIA.
The biggest surprise also came in the first round as Oklahoma Wesleyan's Bruno Seves upset second-seeded Daniel Scholten of Santa Fe, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Scholten is ranked 12th in the nation.
McCorkle fell in the second round to Ricardo Omano, who won the national ITA title last season, 7-5, 7-5.
In other OBU action, Jordan Wacker lost his first round match to Travis Truax of Oklahoma Christian, 7-6 (6-4), 1-6, 10-4, and fourth-seed Juraj Sekera of Oklahoma Christian defeated Tyson Allard, 6-2, 6-2.
Wacker and Allard both won their consolation matches and will square off Saturday in the consolation semifinals. Wacker defeated Ryan Stephenson of Oklahoma Chrtistian, 6-4, 4-6, 12-10, and Allard defeated Jake Keeling of OWU, 6-3, 6-3.
In men's doubles, Allard-Wacker lost in the first round to Keeling-Seves of OWU, 8-4, and lost by the same score in the consolation round to Stephenson-Martinez of OC. McCorkle and Andrew Sharp rebounded from an 8-4 loss to Sekera-Viljoen of OC, for an 8-2 win over Ferguson-Truax of OC. The tandem lost in the consolation finals to Stephenson-Martinez, 8-4.
In women's singles, Sarah Haselwood scored an OBU win over Larissa Anson of Southern Nazarene, 6-0, 6-0, and topped Audrey Donovan of OC in the second round, 6-4, 6-4. She will play fourth-seed Jennifer Le of OC at 10 a.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Kerri McNutt of OBU knocked off SNU's Brooke Ruder, 6-4, 6-2, but lost in the second round to second seed Dasha Ivanova, 6-0, 6-0.
In women's doubles, Haselwood-McNutt lost to Le-Donovan of OC, 8-2, but will play Saturday in the consolation finals.
