SNU Brings Recurring Nightmare to Bison
March 31, 2005
Oklahoma Baptist had a recurring nightmare, losing two games to Southern Nazarene on last-inning rallies, 5-4 and 7-6, Thursday.
In both games, centerfielder Ryan Andrews ripped seventh-inning three-run home runs, then relieved reliever Clay Collier and picked up the save in both games.
In the first game, Southern Nazarene took a quick 1-0 lead in the first but OBU tied in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Rett Terrell.
His brother, Brent Terrell, held SNU scoreless over the next five innings despite battling illness. OBU added three runs in the third on a two-run double by Rett Terrell and and RBI single by Adam Dalby.
The score stayed 4-1 until the seventh inning. With two outs and a runner at second, the Crimson Strom kept the inning alive with an error to put runners on the corners. SNU then reached OBU closer Chad Rhoades (2-2) for an RBI single by Brian Madden ahead of Andrews’ three-run homer — his first hit of the game.
The Bison got the tying run to third in the bottom of the seventh, but stranded Frankie Ibarra there and lost the game.
OBU took the lead in the second game on a sacrifice fly by Eric Curry in the second and built a 4-0 lead in the third when Felix Peguero and Danny Guidry hit back-to-back home runs, Peguero’s being a two-run homer.
SNU scored three times in the fourth of Sean Dryden with a Robert Norman two-run double leading the way.
OBU made it 5-3 in the sixth on Aaron Dickson’s squeeze bunt to score Daniel Hayes.
But it all evaporated in the seventh again. Dryden started the inning by getting the first two hitters out, but then walked the next two. Wes Moreland (1-1) entered and allowed an RBI single to Madden ahead of Andrews’ second three-run home run to make it 7-5.
Guidry homered for a second time in the bottom of the seventh and the Bison filled the bases with one out, but Andrews fanned Curry and retired Bakich on a grounder to short to end the game.
OBU (25-12, 4-6) and SNU (22-17, 3-7) will meet at SNU Saturday afternoon.
