OBU Captures Women's 4x800 Relay Crown

Oklahoma Baptist University’s 4x800 relay team captured the NAIA National Championship Friday night in Johnson City, Tenn.
Chandra Huckabay, Andrea Mount, Melissa Mount and Kyta Ferrer finished the two miles in 9:06.93 breaking the school record. It is OBU’s first women’s indoor relay national title.
Huckabay is a senior from Marlow, the Mount twins are seniors from Mustang and Ferrer is a sophomore from Carrollton, Texas.
The win gives OBU 12 team points and puts them in third place behind Azusa Pacific (26) and Doane College (13) after six scored events.
The men’s 4x800 relay team of Bryce Bell, Michael Elizondo, Prophet Bailey and Landon Willets captured third place, earning All-America honors, in 7:41.7.
Kerry Duckworth was 15th in the men’s long jump finals at 21-11.
The Bison have six team points and are tied for 11th.
In other events Friday, Sara Thurber, who won All-America honors on Thursday in the pentathlon, qualified for the finals of the 55 hurdles. Pat Brown qualified in the men’s 55 hurdles final as well.
Also for OBU, T.J. Lightsey and Bryce Bell qualified for the 600 meter finals, Lightsey with the best time at 1:19.81. The OBU women dominated the 600 semis with the top three times as Melissa Mount (1:35.4), Kyli Bean (1:35.78) and Keyonna Hornbuckle (1:35.88) all won their heats and advanced to the finals.
Kyta Ferrer won her 800 meter heat and advanced to the finals, as did Kelsey Engstrom and Landon Willets in the women’s and men’s 1000 meters.
Mirriam Kaumba won her heat of the 5000 meters and advanced with the best qualifying time at 17:30.56. Daniel Ellis qualified in 10th place on the men’s side.
Clint Goodson missed the finals of the 400 meters in eighth place. Pat Brown won his heat in the 200 meters, but his time did not advance him to the finals. Lightsey also missed the cut.
