Wayland steals one from Bison in OT
February 5, 2005
Wayland Baptist outscored Oklahoma Baptist 11-6 in the extra period of play to defeat OBU 91-86 Saturday in Shawnee.
"I think the start was the key to the game," said Head Coach Doug Tolin. "I think the next thing is the free throw line."
OBU shot only 63.2 percent from the charity stripe, as they were 24-for-36 from the line.
"If you go inside on a team like that you're going to be able to get to the free throw line," said Tolin. "We just have to make more than 24 free throws."
The Pioneers got 30 points from Kendall Webb who led all scorers on the night. Wayland led for 38:51 of the game until Robert Hart put OBU on top 75-73 with 1:09 to play.
"The whole game was fighting up hill," said Tolin. "We dug such a hole and played so poorly at the start of the game that it was such a struggle to get back into it. We didn't do a good job on Webb tonight or he just whooped us depending on how you want to look at it. He was great down the stretch in regulation and in overtime. We didn't have an answer for him tonight."
Webb put Wayland back on top with 42 seconds to play with a three pointer and then added a pair of free throws to put the Pioneers on top 78-75.
Justin Benson brought the Bison within one with a bucket in the paint to make the score 78-77 with 20 seconds left to play.
Webb then took Wayland back out a three point lead with another pair of free throws at 80-77.
With the clock winding down the Bison were at first looking for a two pointer, but there was too little time left on the clock. With six seconds left Leonard Mosley came off a screen and nailed a trey to tie the game up at 80.
Wayland had a chance to win the game in regulation when Webb drove the lane and dished it off to Pedro Montano who was wide open under the goal. Before Montano could get a shot off Frank Benson stripped the ball from Montano with two seconds left and sent the game into overtime.
In the extra period Webb put Wayland up 82-80 and the Pioneers did not trail the rest of the overtime period.
OBU fell to 4-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and 16-8 overall. With the win the Pioneers moved to 5-7 (15-8) in the SAC and now are a half game ahead of the Bison in seventh place. OBU now rests in the last spot (8th) to get into the conference tournament.
The Bison did have five players in double figures with Mosley leading the way with 19 points. Frank and Justin Benson combined for 28 points with Justin scoring 18 and Frank scoring 10. Robert Hart added 17 for the Bison and Mike Fraser dropped in 11.
