OBU Women Roll Past Hillsdale
December 30, 2004
Despite a 23.3 percent shooting performance in the second half, Oklahoma Baptist University's women rolled to a 90-42 win over Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College Thursday, giving coach John McCullough his 100th coaching win at OBU.
OBU came out in a full-court press and quickly led 19-0. The Lady Bison went ahead 32-7 with 14:40 left in the first half. After that, McCullough called off the dogs and Hillsdale slowed the tempo to a crawl. The pace didn't keep OBU from mounting a 56-13 halftime advantage.
The 10th-ranked Bison missed several point-blank shots in the second half but the Lady Saints couldn't capitalize as most of those shots ended up in the hands of the hosts. OBU had 18 offensive rebounds in the second half alone and finished with 31 offensive caroms on the way to a 66-32 rebounding edge.
Layla Schwarz had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Ten of the boards were on the offensive end for OBU. Kelli Welborn shared the team-high scoring honors with Schwarz at 16, while Rachel Heins added 15, Lena Brenning 14 and Trena Robbins 13.
Robbins, who came into the game a 25 percent free throw shooter, hit all six free throws she attempted on the day.
Brenning, who got her first start of the season, had eight rebounds. OBU was without Priscila Alves, who is recovering from an injury to her non-shooting hand.
The game was the last pre-conference contest for the OBU women, who open Sooner Athletic Conference action Jan. 6 at St. Gregory's.
McCullough's 100th win came in his 150th game. He is only the third OBU women's basketball coach to reach 100 wins, trailing Scott Norris (137) and David Sallee (120).
