OBU Women's Golf Team Gaining Reputation
October 19, 2004
Coming off a fall-season ending victory at the South Central Kansas Fall Invitational, the Oklahoma Baptist University women's golf team scored an impressive off-course win Oct. 18 with the Golfstat rating.
Golfstat, along with Region rankings, determine the NAIA Top 25. OBU is ranked eighth in the Golfstat head-to-head standings.
Against a schedule which is rated fifth-toughest among the top 10 teams, OBU has finished ahead of three teams this fall ranked in the Top 25.
"This will put us closer to a Top 10 ranking in the NAIA poll, not just a Top 25," said OBU golf coach Rick Cody.
The OBU women's golf team had its best non-dual match ever in the last tournament, finishing first in the South Central Kansas Fall Invitational with the top three medalists.
Maggie Cole and Jennifer Mann shot second-round leading 75s on Tuesday to lead OBU to a 31-stroke victory over William Woods University. Cole won the tournament with a two-round total of 156. The first round was haunted by poor weather conditions.
Mann finished second at 161 and Michelle Hunter, who carded an 85 and a 77, finished third at 162. Ellen Zaske had a 90 and an 86 to finish in 11th place at 176, while Amber McMurry was 12th at 177 with a 92 and an 85.
OBU recorded a team score of 654, followed by WWU at 685, Newman University at 741, host Southwestern College at 760, Seminole State College at 784, and Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 859.
