ESSR Labs and Equipment

OBU’s dynamic division of Exercise Science, Sports and Recreation offers cutting-edge equipment and lab spaces for aspiring clinicians. These hands-on experimental settings prepare you for the rapidly growing, diverse and ever-changing field of exercise science.

Human Performance Lab

Students in exercise science are trained in the use of the BodPod by COSMED to assess body composition through air plethysmography. This method of body composition analysis is highly accurate and provides real-world fast, usable results as they work to prepare exercise programs and analyze progress.

Exercise science students must understand how the electrical system of the heart works at rest and during exercise. Our electrocardiogram allows students to analyze sinus rhythms at rest that can then be compared to data during graded exercise testing.

The metabolic cart from ParvoMed is a valuable tool that exercise science students learn to use during their studies. Students learn to measure VO2Max, macronutrient usage, and lactate threshold using this lab equipment.

Skin calipers are an excellent choice for the busy exercise professional to assess body fat percentage. By correlating the amount of fat measured at specific sites on the body, students then learn to use regression equations to estimate total body fat percentage.

Experiential Learning

Shaping exercise professionals for today’s clients means utilizing the latest technology to track and assess progress and performance. As an example, OBU has invested in velocity-based training technology and plyometric assessment mats to help prepare students.

Professors in exercise science use hands-on demonstrations to teach students skills. Many of our students are interested in high-level strength and conditioning which requires them to be familiar with standard lifting techniques and safety protocols.

Exercise science students learn that athletic performance is greatly enhanced by balance and reaction speed. As part of this analysis and performance tracking, students learn to use technology, like BlazePods, to measure in a fun, game-like setting.

Balance is essential for athletes and those recovering from injury. The Y-Balance is one form of assessment that students use to determine limb asymmetries as athletes work to progress performance or return to play after injury.

Our innovative and inviting lab spaces are just one part of our world-class education. OBU's Exercise Science Sports Recreation faculty are outstanding and experienced professionals who mentor you as you aspire to turn your passion for health into a purpose-driven profession.
