Advising FAQ

How do I know who my assigned advisees are?

The first step in finding a list of your advisees is to log in to Self Service Banner. Once you have logged in to the secure site follow the path below:

Click on the "Faculty Services" tab > Student Information Menu > Advisee Listing > Select a Term

From this point you can view general information on each student as well as email them directly from SSB. The advisee list is also loaded into Jupiter Grades at the beginning of each term so that you have the convenience of viewing your advisee list there as well.

What if the list of my advisees in Self Service Banner or Jupiter Grades is not correct?

If you find that the list of your advisees in SSB or Jupiter Grades is not correct, please notify Carrie Myles, director of academic advising, at carrie.myles@okbu.edu or 405-585-5080. We will resolve the issue for you and notify the student of any changes that are made. Help us keep our records up to date!

How do I advise an Honors student?

Most Honors students are in close communication with their assigned academic advisor as well as the Director of the Honors Program, Dr. Tawa Anderson. There is a need for some dual advising for these students to ensure that they are fulfilling requirements for their general degree as well as for the Honors program. View the OBU Honors basic requirements and a timeline.

Where can I send my advisees for help with areas outside of my expertise?

One of the greatest things about OBU is that we work within a community of people that all have a different set of strengths, expertise and resources. You are always welcome to direct students to the Milburn Center for help on finding resources. Here are a few names and numbers that might be helpful to you as you work with students on a variety of issues. Just click on each name to find office location and contact information.

How can I view a student's Degree Audit?

Degree Works is a great resource for you as an academic advisor. You can see how to log in and learn the basics of Degree Works. Not only can you view a student's current progress toward a degree but you can also process "What If" scenarios within a major, calculate needed progress for a desired GPA, and keep advising notes and plans in the Educational Planner. It's worth the time!

What do I do if one of my advisees is on Academic Probation?

If one of your students is placed on Academic Probation, check their enrollment in the upcoming semester to confirm that they comply with the requirements of their probationary status. Typically, they will be limited to 13 hours and either required or recommended to take a Success course. You will also want to determine if they need to re-take any courses from previous semester. Once you have made these determinations, contact the student for a meeting. You should also encourage the student to meet with the Director of Student Success to create a plan for grade improvement and future success.
